Growing up, one of my all time favorite television sitcoms was GOLDEN GIRLS. I know what you're thinking, "why were people so surprised when I finally came out of the closet at age 21?". News flash, no one was surprised! Anyway, Stephenson Billings from the blog Christ Wire has published an insightful(?) post theorizing how the '80's hit turned a generation of American boys into flaming homosexuals. Being one of those American boys, I found Stephenson's post absolutely laugh-out-loud funny.
The most unexpected segment of this show’s fanbase was America’s young men. In the 80s, these were boys too delicate for sports, too awkward for girls, too “artistic” for labor-intensive work and too flamboyant for peer acceptance in high school. With no real adults in sight, these poor children became obsessed with the poorly conceived characters on this show. Desperate for a firm hand in their lives, they gravitated to the subversive undercurrent of masculinity in these aged matrons.
And that's just a teaser. Check out the entire post HERE. We're still debating with what seriousness we should take Billings' article. If it's meant to be read tongue-in-cheek, then it's a work of genius. But if he's truly sincere about what he's writing, then his caustic ravings are nothing more than a bigoted opinion piece . . . albeit a hilariously and ignorantly uniformed one.
In other GOLDEN GIRLS news, one of our devoted readers sent us excerpts from Bea Arthur's final interviews which THE INSIDER aired after her death. Take a look:
