According to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP), there's been an alarming increase in the number of hate crimes committed against members of the LGBT community across the country recently. In February alone, we saw the murder of 15 year-old Lawrence King in LA and the brutal beating of Duann Johnson. Since these two instances, there have been 13 additional (reported) hate crimes that are classified as both violent and brutal. Sharon Stapel, Executive Director of the New York City Anit-Violence Project, called the trend "extremely disturbing and saddening". [Hate Crimes Bill]
